These contaminants are unhealthy and must be removed to below the set standard (maximum contaminant level, MCL) before the water can be distributed to the public. In general, these substances cannot be effectively removed by conventional water treatment methods designed to clarify water by removing only the suspended solid material (silt etc.). The following contaminants can be found in water as dissolved ionic substances, and all of these contaminants can be removed by the Basin Water Ion Exchange process:
